Gonk Flops Devlog #1
Hey everyone!
A week ago, your favorite (and possibly only) Gonk Flop dev here, decided to dive headfirst into the wonderful world of Unity URP to create the most gloriously chaotic party game this side of... well, Crab Game (thanks for the inspiration, Dani, you beautiful man).
First Flops: Movement in the Making
Now, I'm not gonna lie, things started a little slow. Between wrestling with real-world responsibilities and my questionable coding speed (let's just say I haven't memorized the entire Unity API yet), it took a whole day to get the basic movement mechanics down. You know, the essentials - sprinting, jumping, crouching, the whole nine yards (or should I say nine flops?). But hey, gotta start somewhere, right?
Multiplayer Mayhem: Taking it Online
With those glorious flops under my belt, it was time to get this party started - online, that is! I decided to go all in with Unity's shiny new Netcode for GameObjects (NGO) and Unity Cloud services like Lobby and Relay because, well, who doesn't love a bit of simplicity
The Great Gonk Character Conundrum
Now, here's where things got a little... interesting. As much as I'd love to sculpt the most majestically derpy Gonks known to mankind, my artistic talents are more suited to drawing stick figures (don't judge). Thankfully, the glorious internet gods led me to Ready Player Me, an avatar creation platform that works like a charm with Unity. Crisis averted!
Floppin' Forward: The Entrance is Set!
The past two days have been a whirlwind of getting the game entrance to, well, not exactly sing, but at least hum a decent flop tune. Right now, it can switch avatars (randomly for now, gotta keep things exciting!), sync those glorious Gonks between players, and even handle creating and joining games for up to four glorious floppers.
What's Next?
The flopping journey continues! Next up, I'll be tackling those wacky minigames that will truly test your flopping mettle. Stay tuned for more devlogs, more flops, and maybe, just maybe, a sneak peek at some truly horrendous Gonk fashion options. Until then, keep floppin'!
